Component Combinations / Communication & Interaction

ComponentsChart

The Birkman Components offer insight into a person’s behavior and motivations. Individually, the Components are very descriptive of individual’s Usual and Stress behavior, as well as their Needs. However, people do not exhibit just one behavior at a time. The eleven Components combined make up the total person. Therefore, when learning about an individual, it is important to look at Component combinations, not just isolated Components.

Birkman has created a group format called the Components Chart. This format allows you to plot a group/team on various Component Combinations. In addition to being able to see where the individuals in a group are plotted, there are also descriptors for each quadrant (i.e. High/High, Low/High, High/Low, and Low/Low). You can access this format by going to the Group or Single Format section of BirkmanDirect®. This format features six critical Component Combinations:

1. Esteem&Acceptance–PeopleRelations
2. Authority&Acceptance–Communication&Interaction
3. Authority&Esteem–DefensiveStrategies
4. Authority&Advantage–NeedtoWin
5. Authority&Freedom–ConflictManagement
6. Empathy&Activity–Competitionwithouttheneedtowin

Acceptance deals with group interactions and can address such questions as: How sociable are you? How do you participate in Groups? Do you seek acknowledgment by the group? Authority deals with directing, controlling and/or verbal dominance. This component can address the following questions: How intensely do you project yourself? How do you utilize power? How do you deal with conflict?

When combined, these two Components give us a powerful look at how we communicate and interact with one another.

The combination of Acceptance and Authority can help describe an individual’s style of interacting and communicating with others. A low Acceptance/low Authority person will most likely exhibit a very deferent and aggreeable style and most commonly will do so in small groups or one-on-one. The individual with a combination of high Acceptance/low Authority will also will also tend to exhibit the deferent and agreeable style, but (s)he will most likely be effective in groups and be seen as very sociable.

The high Acceptance/high Authority person will be seen as very sociable but will openly express differences of opinions in the group setting. The low Acceptance/high Authority person will openly express differences of opinions but will do so more frequently in small groups or one-on-one.

Below is a graph showing the descriptors for the Communication & Interaction combination. We have shown the Acceptance/Authority Component combinations for Usual, Need and Stress.
